Lijiang, China

It is already two months after my trip to Lijiang, I still don’t know how to start talking about this ancient city in China. The mixed feelings kept me thinking, and I can’t figure out if I like or dislike this ancient county in Southwestern China.
Before going there, I have already got lots of information about this well-known ancient county. Traditional, quiet, natural, and mysterious were the first few words kept echoing in my mind. Of course, I also heard a lot about the nightlife in Lijiang, pubs, drinking, dancing…which is completely different from the previous impression. Which is the real Lijiang?
The typical lodge in Lijiang, it is owned by the native Naxi people.

Naxi women wear seven star capes which indicate the important role of women in Naxi culture.

When the night comes, Lijiang is never dark. It is hard to imagine you are in an ancient county far in the mountains.

You can find all kinds of bars, restaurants here. Many young Naxi people speak very fluent English.

Only early in the morning can you find the real peace of Lijiang.

I’m always wondering about what the elder Naxi people would think. Are they happy? They are making more money than they could ever imagine. Are they sad? They would never be able to go back to the peaceful life they used to have.

There is a completely new town built next to the ancient county. Original residents moved to the new town to start their modern life. Local people talked about their new town proudly, but no tourists want to go there (it is not modern enough to attract their attention). Instead, tourists complained about the new city, because it blocked their view of the natural beauty. Should there be a new town? Do the tourists have the right to complain? They are the ones who brought in modern culture. They can’t stop others from developing. Let Lijiang control its own fate.
